06.12.2004 TRANSNISTRIA REFUGEES TO SEEK ASYLUM ABROAD (NEWS CONFERENCE IN INFOTAG)

Chisinau, December 6 (Infotag). About a hundred members of the Transnistrian Refugees Movement have decided to seek political asylum in France, Italy, Germany, Romania, Austria, Great Britain, the United States, and Canada. They stated this intention officially at a news conference held in Infotag today.

Movement Chairman Anatol Bizgu explained the decision had been dictated by the Moldovan leadership’s indifference to political refugees from Transnistria.

“Most Movement members are veterans of the military actions in defense of the territorial integrity and independence of the Republic of Moldova. However, after the 1991-1992 armed conflict, they had to quit their native places in Transnistria and to come to Chisinau. Initially, all were accommodated at Zarya and Doina Hotels [the cheapest ones in the city]. Later, some were given tiny one-room apartments where 4 to 8 persons now live in each such room in awful, unbearable conditions. Other were offered dwellings in rural localities. The Moldovan state has failed to meet its promise to provide living conditions worthy of a human being”, stated Mr. Bizgu.

In his words, the Movement has many times addressed the President, Parliament, Government, Chisinau Municipality, but heard only promises everywhere.

The Transnistrian Refugees Movement sent a complaint against the Moldovan Government to the Supreme Court, but the paper was not even accepted for consideration. Seeing this, Movement members applied to the Supreme Court as individuals, and their complaint hearing has been scheduled for this December 17. And on December 10, the refugees will hold a manifestation in the Chisinau central square.

Presently, the Chisinau Municipality has on its special list 130 refugee families who had to leave their homes in Transnistria in the result of the 1991-1992 armed conflict, including 30 families of Moldova Interior officers who used to serve on the left Dniester bank.
