24.12.2004 VETERANS DEMAND AIR TIME ON TV (NEWS CONFERENCE IN INFOTAG)

Chisinau, December 24 (Infotag). Members of Moldova’s 1992 Independence War Veterans’ Union have demanded airtime on Moldova-1 channel.

In a statement made Friday at a news conference in Infotag, attended by veterans from Chisinau, Soroca, Drochia, Orhei, Cantemir and Dubasari districts, Chairman of the Union Eduard Maican said none of the Union’s events held over the last couple of years have been provided TV coverage.

Moldova-1 ignores the veterans who defended Moldova’s sovereignty and independence, which is inadmissible. We demand that within a month they give us an air time allowing us to inform the general public of the situation in which the country’s defenders have found themselves now, said the Chairman.

These days, the Union incorporates 38 territorial organizations with a 31,000-strong membership.

“The majority of our members suffer health problems, are unemployed, and forced to leave the country in a search of better life. Some of them have even adopted foreign citizenship. The benefits provided by Moldovan government are too low and the families of the deceased veterans receive no benefits at all,” the Chairman added.

He emphasized that neither the current government, nor its predecessors have appropriated any funds for a monument to those who fell in the combat defending the country’s independence.
