08.11.2005 “IF ONLY I AM ELECTED MAYOR, THE CITY WILL SEE REAL CHANGES” – OLEG CERNEI

Chisinau. Mr. Oleg Cernei, the “Alianta Verde” [Green Alliance] Ecological Movement’s candidate for Chisinau Mayor, has promised during his news conference in Infotag today that if only he becomes Mayor, real changes shall take place in the capital city.

Cernei explained he decided to stand for this post “because I am not corrupt, have never belonged to the former State nomenclature, and have specialized directly in tackling city problems for nearly a decade” – as a member of the Chisinau Municipal Council, Executive Director of the Chisinau Board of Privatized Housing Owners’ Associations, and as Executive Secretary of the Consultative Board of Non-Governmental Consumer Right Protection Organizations.

Oleg Cernei has divided his electoral program into 7 major sections: housing; utility services; environment protection; students; education, culture and social protection; transport and roads; suburbs development.

The candidate proposes, in particular, to arrange credits for housing – first and foremost for young families and the needy; a better energy-saving thermal insulation of apartment houses; signature of direct contracts between consumers and service providers; adoption of a municipal plan of environment protection; to build a garbage-disposal plant; free public transport for schoolchildren, college and university students; building of single-room apartments for students; elaboration of a new strategy of municipal public transport development; ensuring of economic balance between the city proper and Chisinau suburbs, etc.

Cernei also stated he is going to be a really independent Mayor, “and I shall never render an account to the central authorities, not like [incumbent Acting Mayor] Vasile Ursu does it”.

Oleg Cernei is 34 years of age. He is married, has a son, is a historian by higher education, and has graduated from the History Department of Moldova State University, Bucharest National School of Political and Administration Studies, and European Institute of Political Studies (Chisinau-Strasbourg).
