28.09.2006 ABOUT 80% OF ELDERLY PEOPLE OF MOLDOVA ARE IGNORANT OF THEIR RIGHTS

Chisinau, September 29 (Infotag). About 80% of the elderly people of Moldova are ignorant of their rights. Such are the data of the social poll, carried out by the “Second Breath for Elderly and Handicapped Persons” organization (Balti), which coordinates the activities of the non-governmental organizations on protecting the elderly.

On Thursday the old aged people of Moldova and non-governmental organizations, participating in the SEEN program of the HelpAge International organization summed up the results of the four-year activities of the program in Moldova and the problems of the elderly and possibilities for protecting their rights.

In the frame of the SEEN three meeting of non-governmental organizations took place on the national level in 2004, where they discussed issues, relating to discrimination, international conventions on protection the rights of the old-aged.

The “Second Breath” organization worked out and published an information bulletin on new laws in the field of healthcare, social protection and on juridical assistance. The “Plan of Actions of the Madrid City on Aging Issues” pamphlet was published in Romanian. It is intended for the elderly, social employees, non-governmental organizations.

Organizations from Serbia and Monte Negro, Albany, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova are participating in the SEEN, of HelpAge International in SouthEast Europe.

The organization deals with the elderly from 1998. Its main activities are social services, assistance, protecting the rights of the elderly and dissemination of information materials.
