31.01.2007 LOCAL ELECTIONS TO BE DEMOCRACY EXAM FOR MOLDOVA, ANALYSTS SAY

Chisinau, January 31 (Infotag). Experts from the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT) and the Expert-Grup analytical center presume the 2007 local elections will become for Moldova a good examination on democracy.

Today, a news conference was held in Infotag on the occasion of the presentation of the 4th Euromonitor Report on the progress of the EU-Moldova European Neighborhood Policy Action Plan, and ADEPT Executive Director Igor Botan said the approaching elections will clearly show to which extent democracy has been developed in this republic.

“Depending on how free, fair and correct the elections are going to be, one will judge about how successively the Action Plan is being realized here”, the researcher said.

The 4th Euromonitor Report has highlighted regress in a whole number of fields in Moldova, such as the freedom of the press, struggle against corruption, creation of favorable conditions for business running, Government’s non-interference into business activities, independence of the judiciary, and other.
