01.02.2007 ECOLOGISTS CONSIDER TRANSFORMATION OF NATURE RESERVES INTO NATIONAL PARKS UNJUSTIFIED

Chisinau, February 1 (Infotag). The environment protection non-governmental organizations such as Eco-Tiras, Fauna, Biotica, the Ecological Movement of Moldova, the National Academy of Ecological Sciences demanded from the Government on the initiative of the Alianţa Verde ecological party to refuse from the idea to transform the state scientific nature reserves into national parks.

Party Chairman Andrei Dumbraveanu said at a press conference in Infotag on Thursday that the change of the nature reserves’ status will result in reducing their protection level.

„The true purpose of the Bill lies in the ruthless exploitation of the forests, remained on the territories of the nature reserves, the construction of cottages and tourist centers,” he considers.

According to Dumbraveanu, the forests in Moldova occupy only 1.72% of its territory, whereas in Europe the average share of forests constitutes 5-13%.

Representative of the Ecological movement of Moldova Lilia Curchi said that the analogous amendments, made in 2001, allowed the Redeco company to extract oil in the Lower Prut zone.

“Enormous damage is inflicted upon the nature. If the state nature reserves are transformed into national parks, once we can face other examples of this kind”, Curchi said.

Ecologists do not oppose the creation of national parks, but not on the basis of the state nature reserves.
