15.10.2007 PURCARI RESUMES SALE OF ITS LEGENDARY WINES

Chisinau, October 15 (Infotag). The Vinaria Purcari company has supplied to the market the first batch of its legendary wines – Negru de Purcari and Roşu de Purcari.

Vinaria Purcari Deputy Director Artur Martin said on Monday at their presentation in Infotag that the winery has not produced them for more than 15 years.

“In 2003 we have laid the wines for their fermentation in French oak barrels, and then after their ageing in bottles under ideal conditions, Negru de Purcari and Roşu de Purcari produce an unforgettable impression. These are exactly the wines of the same taste, color and aroma, which was known by representatives of high classes of the population in all the countries, where they were exported. Let is be Great Britain, the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union”, Marin said.

In his words, 100 thousand bottles of each of these wines will be produced annually.

“Wines will be sold at 250 lei in Moldovan shops. We are also negotiating their export with our partners from the CIS, Europe and Great Britain”, Deputy Director remarked.

Answering a question by Infotag, Director General of the winery Victor Bostan said that he is afraid of the falsification of these wines.

“The bottles, labels and paper for them are not produced in Moldova. Wines, when they are sold in restaurants are tasted first and we are sure that it is impossible not to recognize Negru de Purcari and Roşu de Purcari”, Bostan said.

In his words, the Vinaria Purcari company has 300 hectares of its own vineyards, including such varieties as Saperavi and Rara neagră. One thousand people, including 60% foreigners, visit monthly the tourist center, created at the winery.

The beginning of the Purcari winemaking dates back into the XIX century. In 1847 at the Bessarabian agricultural exhibition a Purcari wine won its first golden medal. Then at the World Exhibition in 1878 Negru de Purcari also won the highest award. From that time wine was supplied to the Russian Emperor Nikolai the Second’s court, English King George the Fourth’s court and Queen Victoria’s Court.
