LAWYER GHEORGHE AVORNIC ANNOUNCES HIS RESIGNATION FROM POSITION OF MEMBER OF SUPREME COUNCIL OF PROSECUTORS

Prominent lawyer Gheorghe Avornic has announced his resignation from the position of member of the Supreme Council of Prosecutors (SCP), to which he was appointed by decision of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.  He said this in a press statement to the INFOTAG agency.

"I publicly announce my resignation from the position of member of the Superior Council of Prosecutors. I take this step voluntarily and without anyone's coercion. Everyone told me to fight, my friends advised me to fight to the end. That is what I would do if I were alone. But there are many people behind me, and I don't want anyone to suffer. I don't want the Academy or other institutions from education, culture, and research that I am involved with to suffer. I don't want the Academy of Sciences to be told by the government that they may not give funding because of my appointment. I refuse in favor of these institutions I want people to hear it from me, not to be judged by the rumors that are spread in some media," Avornic explained.

In addition, he noted that he heads several educational institutions, has dedicated his life to education and research, training for the justice system, and has been practicing law for almost 33 years. The lawyer noted that he would not criticize anyone or name any names.

"I have evidence, and I could do it, I'm not afraid of it. But I don't want people to suffer because of me. I know this because I've had similar situations in my life before. Within two months I lost my parents, aged 55 and 56, also because of politics and speculation in the mass media," the lawyer stressed.

At the same time, Avornic expressed his gratitude to the Academy's competition committee, which conducted the selection process for the SCP.

"I am grateful for this confidence. But I refuse, I refuse in favor of institutions, in favor of education and science," Avornic stressed, asking the media to give the text of the application as fully as possible and to respect his privacy.

Earlier, President Maia Sandu, Justice Minister Sergiu Litvinenco and some representatives of civil society harshly criticized the Academy of Sciences for its decision to appoint Gheorghe Avornic as a member of the SCP.
