ANIMAL PROTECTORS CALL ON PRESIDENT AND PARLIAMENT TO INTERVENE IN SITUATION WITH STRAY ANIMALS IN CHISINAU

Animal advocates appealed to Moldovan President Maia Sandu and the Parliament with an urgent request to intervene in the situation with stray animals in Chisinau, which multiply uncontrollably in the capital city.

Speaking at a news conference held at News Agency Infotag on Thursday, civil society activist Lidia Vinogradova reminded that the Chisinau Municipal Council recently voted - at the initiative of Councilor Ruslan Verbitchi of the DA Platform party - to create a new animal care enterprise on the basis of the municipal Regia Autosalubritate [solid domestic garbage removal] company.

“By the effort of most of DA Platform Councilors and of Socialists, the municipal Department for animal control and protection was closed down, though it had effectively worked for three years. At Verbitchi's urging, a new Regulation on Stray Animal Regulation was proposed. We believe that this alliance of the two parties is aimed at ensuring that completely incompetent persons begin to “do business” on this problem, instead of solving it”, said the animal rights activist.

Vinogradova stressed that “the Regulations of the new enterprise indicate the number of staff units with their salaries, the number of chiefs, accountants and security guards, but nothing is said about how animals will be accommodated in the new necropolis proposed for construction, or how they will be treated and sterilized”.
