PRO EUROPA SPEAKS OF ‘PARADOXICAL SITUATION’ IN TRANSNISTRIA CONFLICT SETTLEMENT

PRO EUROPA SPEAKS OF ‘PARADOXICAL SITUATION’ IN TRANSNISTRIA CONFLICT SETTLEMENT

Chisinau.   A paradoxical situation has developed in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process, maintains the Pro Europa Association of Transnistria.

Its Chairman Boris Assarov told a news conference in Infotag today that “on the one hand, a possibility has emerged to complete reintegration of Moldova shortly. But on the other hand, the form and contents of the proposed reintegration process fail to meet national interests”.

Assarov presumes the process should meet the norms of “a modern Euro-Atlantic civilization”, including European standards. He said that one of the basic principles of modern Europe is the holding of free and fair elections, and that an indispensable condition of such elections is the freedom of assembly, freedom of marches, meetings and demonstrations.

“In the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, such signs of democracy are practically fully absent. The aggressive propaganda, conducted by the totalitarian Smirnov-Antiufeyev regime with respect to the region’s populace, has deformed and crippled citizens’ political consciousness and has caused a zombie effect, when the population’s political will is under the authorities’ total control”, said Boris Assarov.

He stands for democratization of the Transnistrian region through institutionalizing the Mission of UN High Commissioner for Transnistria affairs in order to create main democratic institutions and conditions for holding free elections.

Assarov believes such elections should be open only to Republic of Moldova citizens, but elected deputies should not necessarily have the RM citizenship. He also presumes the Republic of Moldova “is one single electoral constituency, and its fractionalization undermines national security”.

Pro Europe also stands for changing the format of the ongoing peacekeeping mission. The association believes the mission can be conducted under the auspices of the NATO-Russia Council, with a proportional representation.
