Chisinau, November 21 (Infotag). Mr. Oleg Cernei, the “Alianta Verde” [Green Alliance] Ecological Movement’s candidate for Chisinau Mayor, convened an emergency news conference in Infotag last Saturday night and stated he is being intimidated “by the Communist authorities and by the candidate they back – Vasile Ursu”.

He disclosed some details of how the Communists have been treating him lately. For instance, “the secret services persecute me by tapping my telephone calls. This is done to see whom I communicate and work with during the election campaign”.

Cernei believes “the culmination of their attacks” has been the recent cutting of central heat supply to the multistory apartment house he lives in.

“The official explanation offered to house tenants was their ancient arrears for the heating dating back to 2000. That house effects all its current dues accurately, and is fully ready for the heating season technically. I am convinced they cut off the heating supply exceptionally to intimidate me. I am sorry that hundreds of innocent people, including little children and pensioners, are suffering because of me”, Oleg Cernei said.

Cernei is sure he is “the only candidate capable to offer a sound rivalry to Vasile Ursu, and the authorities realize this perfectly well. Mr. Ursu has several times asked me to convene no news conferences. He may well offer me a high post in the City Hall, may be even a Deputy Mayor, if only I quit the election race. However, I shall never agree to this, for I shall continue my struggle against the present system of corruption in the Chisinau Municipality”.

At that news conference, the Moldovan Federation of Student and Youth Organizations, the “New Wave” Youth Forum, and the City Council of Privatized Housing Owners (uniting over 6 hundred multistory apartment houses) stood up with their statements saying they had decided to support Oleg Cernei at the elections as “the most acceptable candidature”.
