27.09.2006 RULING COMMUNIST PARTY PREFERS TO ANNIHILATE OPPONENTS – SDPM

Chisinau, September 27 (Infotag). “Instead of a critical revision of its political course and resolving the heaping socio-economic problems, the ruling party has chosen a tactics of annihilation of its opponents”, maintains Social Democratic Party Chairman Eduard Musuc.

He told a news conference in Infotag today that as a SDPM congress is approaching (due on November 4), the Communist authorities have organized a campaign of persecution, blackmail and intimidation of SDPM leaders.

“Our oppositional party expresses its stance openly and consistently, which the Communist authorities often hate. To discredit us in the public’s eyes, the ruling party uses the entire leverage it has – courts, controlling organs, power structures that subject SDPM activists to shadowing and electronic eavesdropping”, Eduard Musuc said.

Recently, he received summons to arrive at the Center for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption in connection with initiation of a new criminal action into events dating back to 4 years ago and related to his Megadat.com company.

“Today, I must come to the Center. According to reliable information I have, they are going to arrest me, to make searches at SDPM offices, to arrest other party activists and members of their families, and to carry out searches at their homes”, Musuc said.

He further stated that despite all the loud statements about country democratization and European integration, the Communist authorities keep on applying authoritarian methods of rule in all spheres of life, using political reprisals on opponents and manipulating the public opinion.

“Moldova is on the verge of an economic, social and political crisis. Soaring energy rates, failing exports, the ban on Moldovan wine exports to Russia will lead to unemployment and devaluation of wages and pensions. In such conditions, it is necessary to cardinally change the state policy, mobilize the society, and work to enlist people’s trust on both banks of the Dniester River”, Musuc said.

“Instead of all this, the Communists have chosen another method – persecution of dissidents. However, the Moldovan society is awakening, and discontent is growing among the citizenry, so the Communists are unable to suppress everybody. Our slogan is not “Jos communiştii!” [Down with the Communists!], but “Sus Moldova!” [Long Live Moldova!]”, Eduard Musuc emphasized.

He said that despite all threats, the Social Democratic Party of Moldova will be working hard for the sake of the country’s genuine democratization in all spheres. The SDPM is going to inform the Socialist International and the Party of European Socialists in the European Parliament about the developments in Moldova.
