25.10.2006 HISTORIAN PETRENCO TO HEAD EUROPEAN ACTION

Chisinau, October 25 (Infotag). Ex-Chairman of the Association of Moldovan Historians professor Anatol Petrenco has been elected Chairman of a new socio-political organization called the European Action Movement. Last Saturday, he received the unanimous vote of confidence from the delegates to the new force’s constituent congress held in Chisinau.

Doctor of Geography Vitalie Sochirca and energy expert Boris Ceban have been elected as Deputy Chairmen, Dr. Marianna Taranu – as the European Action Secretary General, and writer Paul Ghom, who was born in Bessarabia and now lives in Paris – as a Movement honorary member.

Petrenco told a news conference in Infotag today the congress was attended by over 800 delegates from all raions of Moldova, including from Transnistria and Gagauzia. They voted for adopting the European Action’s Charter and Political program, and elected the organization’s governing organs.

Anatol Petrenco said the Movement’s main task for the nearest future is to get registered with the Ministry of Justice.

“As soon as we are registered, we will get down to planning our further actions, including participation in the 2007 local elections. We have drawn up a complex-like program of steps on the country’s soonest accession to the European Union. This is our organization’s chief objective”, Petrenco said.

He further held, “Moldova’s unification with Romania is impossible at the present time because we do not have parliamentarians enough who would vote for this. But unification with the European Union is quite realistic, though Moldova may well miss this chance if the current state policy in this respect remains as it is nowadays”.

The European Action Movement emerged on the Moldovan political arena in autumn 2005.
