06.11.2006 MOLDOVA RAISES BY 14 POSITIONS IN CORRUPTION PERCEPTIONS INDEX

Chisinau, November 6 (Infotag). Moldova has raised by 14 positions in the Corruption Perceptions Index and took 81 position out of 163. It was at a press conference in Infotag, carried out by the representatives of Transparency International Moldova.

Executive Director of this organization Lilia Carasciuc said Moldova obtained 3.2 points out 10 possible ones.

The Corruption perception level testifies that Moldova is the leader among the CIS countries in combating corruption. It is followed by Armenia – 2.9, Ukraine and Georgia –2.8 each, Kazakhstan – 2.6, Russia – 2.5. The CIS list is concluded by Belarus and Uzbekistan –2.1 points each”, she said.

In the total classification Moldova is on the same level as Burkina Faso, Lesotho, Morocco and Trinidad and Tobago.

“The average Corruption Perceptions Index in the European Union countries accounts for seven points. Finland has the best result (9.6), it tops the global classification list.

Country-candidates for the admittance to the European Union from January 1, 2007 Bulgaria and Romania obtained 4.0 and 3.1 points and took 57 and 88 positions.

“The successes, reached by Moldova are the results of the strengthening of combating corruption during the last years, making bribers responsible for their actions, changing the mentality of the population, which gives less bribes”, Carasciuc considers.

Transparency International Moldova marked its fifth anniversary on November 1, 2006. For this time it published many reference and other books, poll results on combating corruption, protecting human rights and ethics.

The 2006 Corruption Perceptions Index is a composite index that draws on multiple expert opinion surveys that poll perceptions of public sector corruption in 163 countries around the world, the greatest scope of any CPI to date. It scores countries on a scale from zero to ten, with zero indicating high levels of perceived corruption and ten indicating low levels of perceived corruption. It is based on 12 researches, carried out by international organizations on this problem
