18.12.2006 MNA LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN ON COLLECTING SIGNATURES OF CITIZENS WISHING TO RESTORE ROMANIAN CITIZENSHIP

Chisinau, December 18 (Infotag). The Moldova Noastră Alliance (MNA) has started a campaign on collecting signatures of citizens wishing to restore the Romanian citizenship.

MNA Vice-Chairman Viaceslav Untila said on Monday at a press conference in Infotag that it is conducted in support of former Romanian citizens and their successors.

“The rude and forced deprivation of the Romanian citizenship is a great historical injustice. It should be corrected by giving these citizens the chance to restore their right, of which they were once deprived”, he remarked.

“Untila said that the Law on the Romanian citizenship envisages the possibility of restoring the citizenship, but it does not determine clear procedure.

“We shall demand from the Romanian authorities to optimize the procedure for restoring the Romanian citizenship. The concrete terms for considering applications on restoring the Romanian citizenship must be fixed. It is abnormal and humiliating when people are waiting for years to restore their citizenship”, he said.

According to Untila, the Romanian citizenship became less accessible for Moldovan citizens than the citizenship of Russia, Ukraine and Bulgaria.

“It is difficult to understand, but the matter is of the Romanian citizens who were deprived of the Romanian citizenship against their own will”, he said.
