20.12.2006 NLP MAY BACK OTHER LIBERAL CANDIDATES AT 2007 LOCAL ELECTIONS

Chisinau, December 20 (Infotag). The National Liberal Party is not ruling out its providing support for the candidates of other Liberal formations at the all-republican local elections to be held in Moldova next spring.

Party Chairwoman MP Vitalia Pavlicenco told a news conference in Infotag her party is presently selecting a NLP candidate for Chisinau Mayor, but “as for our candidates in other populated areas, we have not decided finally on the issue yet. May be, we will create a Liberal alliance to support the electoral candidates of those Liberal formation which will have the highest chances for success”.

In her words, the NLP’s revival was necessary for the sake of uniting the Liberal idea with national renaissance of Moldova.

“We stand for the founding of an inter-state union of Romania and Moldova as a guarantee of our successful movement toward Euro-Atlantic structures. The Moldovan electorate is disappointed about the current situation in this republic, because the policy waged here last 15 years has been an anti-Romania policy”, stated the Moldovan lawmaker.

Pavlicenco believes her party will be absorbing the former members of the Christian Democratic Popular Party. She said, “Many CDPP members have got disillusioned, and quitted that party. And many are yet to leave it in the future. We are not ruling out they will come to us, and we will do our best to not disappoint them”.

NLP Deputy Chairman MP Anatol Taranu believes the Transnistria conflict would not be an obstacle to Moldova’s accession to the European Union.

“This does not mean we want to renounce the Transnistrian region. On the contrary, the National Liberal Party shall work for the territorial integrity and statehood of the Republic of Moldova until the victorious end”, he emphasized.

The NLP leadership suggested setting up a special commission to observe the privatization of the municipal Antena-C radio and EuroTV channel, as well as holding – simultaneously with the 2007 local elections – of a referendum on the Chisinau Municipal Council’s decision to privatize these two municipal public broadcasters.
