LAWYER MIHAI CORJ INSISTS ON REVISION OF MOLDOVAN CONSTITUTION

Lawyer Mihai Corj insists on considering a popular initiative to revise the Moldovan Constitution. He believes that the Ministry of Justice is hiding it from the public.

On Friday, Corj said at a press conference at the INFOTAG news agency that many articles of the Constitution have lost their relevance in 26 years.

"The development of the initiative was preceded by a public debate involving all interested parties. We have identified the articles that need decisive reform. For example, there is a clear need to reduce the number of deputies from the current 101, for example, to 71. The first number was determined more than 30 years ago, when the population was 4.3 million citizens. We need to reduce the number of "servants of the people. This would optimize budget allocations to parliament," stated the head of the lawmaking institute Lex Scripta, chairman of the initiative group to revise the constitution.

Another example, he stressed, is the president's actual, not formal, renunciation of membership in any party.

In addition, Corj recalled that in the summer of 2021, then-President Igor Dodon voiced his intention to revise the Basic Law.

"I asked then Justice Minister Fadei Nagacevschi a question: “What prevents the implementation of the people's initiative?” I also ask this question to the current Minister of Justice, Sergiu Litvinenco. Doesn't the current President Maia Sandu want to see a responsible approach to the revision of the Constitution, based on the demands and aspirations of citizens, and not on narrow group interests," the lawyer is puzzled.
