TRADE UNION SINDLEX CALLS TO OBSERVE POLICE’S RIGHTS

Mihai Lascu, Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions SINDLEX, called on the civil society to observe and respect policemen’s and carabineers’ right to security at their executing their law enforcement duties. He said at a press conference held at the Infotag agency on Wednesday that various protest actions have intensified in Chisinau in recent weeks.

“We respect the constitutional right of every citizen and political formation to express their opinions. But this should take place in a civilized and peaceful manner. Protest actions should not violate the rights of other citizens to free movement or a comfortable existence. In the light of recent actions, we observe the opposite: the police are not obeyed in their legal demands, they are resisted, and the law is openly violated,” Lascu stressed.

He urged the organizers of the protests to conduct them strictly in accordance with the letter of the law, to prevent the introduction of inadequate persons prone to violence and provocations into the ranks of the demonstrators.

Lascu reminded that those were the police and border guards, officers of other departments of the Ministry of the Interior who were on the first line of receiving refugees from the warring neighboring Ukraine.

“Law enforcement officers behaved with dignity and professionalism, strengthening the image of Moldova. And now they act on the basis of their authority to ensure public security, not allowing the blocking of streets. The authorities should use both administrative and criminal legislation if violations are revealed during the protest,” Lascu said, emphasizing that “the police are outside politics and their task is the safety of fellow citizens.”
