29.11.2005 CANDIDATE CERNEI TO CONTINUE STRUGGLE

Chisinau, November 29 (Infotag). The “Alianta Verde” [Green Alliance] Ecological Movement’s candidate for Chisinau Mayor Mr. Oleg Cernei has stated he is in good moods and shall stand for a repeat election which, according to the law, is to be held within two weeks from last Sunday, i.e. on December 11.

Cernei regards his electoral gain of 4.09% ballots as his personal victory. He stated at a news conference in Infotag today he shall necessarily take part in the repeat election, and shall be doing all in his powers to make Chisinau “a modern and democratic European capital”.

“I guess that if the electoral legislation is duly observed, if the Central Electoral Commission objectively informs the population about the ongoing election campaign, and if the head of state does not interfere into the electoral process, one can expect that Chisinau citizens will come to polling stations and vote for a better future”, said Oleg Cernei.

He named the November 27 elections as “rigged, unfair, and non-democratic… The flagrant-most violation of the legislation was by President Voronin who appeared over the local television 3 days before the election and in fact challenged [7 of the 8] candidates. This was but a breach of the Moldovan Constitution and European conventions, and it demonstrated that Moldova has a dictatorial, undemocratic political system”.

Cernei expressed regret that during the election campaign some local churches yielded to “pre-election prostitution… Candidate Vasile Ursu [the one distinguished by the President] promised 100 thousand lei to Durlesti Church, and $10,000 to Truseni Church. Consequently, their priests enthusiastically embarked on canvassing in Ursu’s favor. And on the voting day, a priest in the St. Theodora Church interrupted a sermon and called on the worshippers to go and vote for Ursu. This was a crying violation of not only the Electoral Code but also of basic morals principles”.

Oleg Cernei qualified all that as “national disgrace”, and sent an official protest to the Central Electoral Commission.
