02.05.2006 GAYS AND LESBIANS NOT PERMITTED TO RALLY IN FRONT OF PARLIAMENT

Chisinau, May 2 (Infotag). Like a year ago, the Chisinau Municipality has not permitted to the GenderDoc-M Center to organize a march and rally of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals in front of the Moldovan Parliament.

Center Chairman Alexei Marchkov told a news conference in Infotag today the march was going to be organized on May 5 in the framework of the 5th annual festival “Rainbow over the Dniester”.

He said, the Municipality is afraid that such an unusual march will provoke “violations of public order with consequences grave for the society… We regard such an argument as unfounded and insulting to sexual minorities. This refusal is a breach of basic human rights and of Moldova’s own commitments within the EU-Moldova Action Plan that stipulates the adoption of a non-discriminatory legislation with respect to minorities – in conformity with European standards”.

GenderDoc-M is going to challenge the prohibition with court, and will urge European organizations and countries to discuss the minorities topic with the Moldovan authorities.

“We shall not violate the Chisinau Municipality’s decision. However, our festival shall take place. This is going to be an exclusively peaceful event, whose program includes cultural and educative events, an international conference, a festival of topical films, a mini-soccer tournament, concerts, etc. We are expecting guests to come from Sweden, the Netherlands, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, and other countries”, said Alexei Marchkov.
