Chisinau, March 26 (Infotag). The Acţiunea Europeană [European Action] socio-political movement has called upon all opposition forces to nominate a common candidate for Chisinau Mayor at the all-republican local elections due on June 3, 2007.

Movement Chairman Anatol Petrenco stated at a news conference in Infotag today the nomination of a common candidate “would be the wisest of all decisions. We stand ready to back any candidate from the opposition, and the chief condition is that such candidate ought to be a well-known and wise personality enjoying the support of all oppositional formations”.

Petrenco mentioned several names, which he believes could become good candidatures for Chisinau Mayor – music composer Eugen Doga, analyst Veaceslav Ionita, ex-Minister of Economy and Trade Valeriu Lazar, Editor-in-Chief of Literatura şi Arta newspaper Nicolae Dabija, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Nicolae Tiu. From among active politicians, the Acţiunea Europeană is ready to support the candidacy of Dorin Chirtoaca (Liberal Party).

“If a common candidate fails to be nominated, we will back the most suitable independent candidate, for Acţiunea Europeană has not yet been registered by the Ministry of Justice. Our action against the Ministry is being considered by the Appeals Chamber”, said the Movement leader.

The MoJ refused to register Acţiunea Europeană on grounds that many of the signatures submitted to the MoJ in the movement’s support were falsified.
