On February 25, 1994, parliamentary elections were held by proportional system (by party lists). Since then, the Parliament consists of 101 deputies elected for a four-year term by secret and free voting.

On July 29, 1994, Parliament adopted a new Constitution of the country. On July 5, 2000, the Parliament, by a constitutional majority, introduced a number of amendments to the Constitution, which led to the transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary form of government.

According to the press service of the Parliament, in 33 years, the Parliament has held 1,895 sessions, during which it adopted 12,986 legislative acts. Fourteen constitutional laws, almost 6,000 organic laws and more than 508 ordinary laws were passed. The rest of the acts passed are resolutions and declarations of Parliament.

Until 2019, the convocations of the Parliament were held since the creation of the Moldovan SSR, after which it was decided to switch to the calculation from the elections of the first Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. Thus, the Parliament of the XIth convocation is now in operation.
