RESOUNDING CIGARETTE-SMUGGLING CASE SUBMITTED TO COURT

The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office has completed its investigation and has filed to the Hincesti court a resonant criminal case, involving eight persons, including three employees of the Leuseni customs station (Moldova), accused of large-scale contraband of cigarettes.  

As already reported by Infotag, on December 14, 2012, a record-breaking consignment of contraband Moldovan cigarettes was found by the Romanian border policemen of the Albita customs house, during the examination of a truck-trailer heading from Moldova to Macedonia, that had already crossed the Moldovan customs station Leuseni. Initially, the driver of the lorry truck said that he was carrying returned empties. Yet, upon examining the vehicle, the Romanian border officials detected a large-scale consignment of smuggled cigarettes amounting to 2.3 million lei.  

The Husi Court (Romania) convicted the driver of lorry truck to 3 years in jail. The Moldovan Prosecutor’s Office, has also completed recently the criminal investigation against the customs officials. They have been discharged of their duties and are currently prosecuted at large.

The prosecutors also submitted to court the criminal case involving two employees of the Costesti customs point, accused of having received bribes of 200 euros, four times, from Moldovan entrepreneurs, for facilitating the transportation via the state border, of spare pars for vehicles.
