BROADCASTING COUNCIL IMPOSED FINES AMOUNTING TO 3.14 MILLION LEI IN 2023

11 april, 2024

In 2023, the Broadcasting Council imposed fines totaling 3.14 million lei. As reported by INFOTAG, this was stated in its report presented to parliament on Thursday.

For violations of legislation, the Council applied 371 sanctions, compared to 447 in 2022. The total amount of fines increased from 2.34 million lei to 3.14 million.

“The fact that the amounts of fines have increased, in the context of a decrease in the number of measures by 76, is explained by the gradual transition to another approach, especially regarding the broadcast of local programs. Sanctions related to the protection of the national audiovisual space and sanctions related to election coverage are also being applied for the first time,” the report says.

It notes that during the election period in local elections, the Council for the first time monitored all media service providers who applied for coverage: 25 TV channels and 17 radio stations. The monitoring results showed that some providers did not adhere to the principles of objectivity, balance, and impartiality in election coverage.
