DUMITRU DIACOV ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF PARLIAMENTARY DP FACTION

The parliamentary Democratic faction will now on be headed by DP Honorable Chairman Dumitru Diacov, it was decided at a faction meeting held on Wednesday evening behind closed doors.

The Democrat MPs discussed the current situation in the party and preparation to an extraordinary DP congress scheduled for July 27. During the meeting, former Moldova Prime Minister Pavel Filip announced his resignation as faction chairman, explaining his step with “a heavy workload, complicated situation in the party, and the pressure being put on DP parliamentarians”, a meeting participant told Infotag.

So, the faction decided to elect Dumitru Diacov their chairman.

“We had practically no choice because Mr. Diacov is a co-founder and the Honorable Chairman of the Democratic Party. The DP has no other leaders to choose from because the entire DP leadership has resigned. Filip has remained the only DP Deputy Chairman [out of 12 only one month ago], and he will be DP Acting Chairperson until the congress. Diacov’s appointment as faction head will be officially announced at the nearest plenary meeting of the Parliament”, said the Democrat.

At the congress on July 27 the Democrats will elect their new party leader and a new DP National Council that will elect Deputy Chairpersons and a DP Secretary General.

“The situation is complicated by the fact that neither Diacov nor Filip wish to become DP Chairman. Well, I believe we will overcome this problem because quite many worthy people have remained under the DP banners”, said the deputy.

At the same time, the Democrat categorically dispelled assertions about an alleged split in the party or in its parliamentary faction as well as assertions that some deputies are allegedly preparing to leave the faction and even to resign from parliament.

“This is out of the question! The DP faction is remaining solid. Some colleagues find it hard to get used to being an opposition force, which presupposes a totally different style of work and behavior. They are experiencing pressure, attacks, unfounded accusations of crimes they did not commit etc. But all this will pass. The Democratic Party is a mighty formation, and shall overcome all this, and we shall show our worth at the forthcoming local election. We have already started preparation to it”, said the deputy.
