PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL: MAIA SANDU’S ELECTION IS A CALL FOR A ROBUST REFORM AGENDA

19 january, 2021

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has named the election of Maia Sandu President of the Republic of Moldova “a call (by the citizens -" I. ") for a robust reform agenda and anti-corruption which the European Union (EU) fully supports.” As Infotag reports, he wrote about this on social networks following a meeting with Sandu in Brussels the day before.

The official stressed that “the EU stand in solidarity in the fight against COVID19 and in pursuing socio-economic recovery.”

Sandu reminded on social networks that “in recent years Moldova has been isolated from the EU,” saying that “this isolation was caused by some politicians in Chisinau, who decided to sacrifice the country's interest in their own and violated the interest of millions of fellow citizens for their own corrupt interests.”

“This stage has ended, and the Republic of Moldova can resume its natural path of rapprochement with the European family. We are a European people, with a European vocation and a European future,” Sandu noted.

Also the day before, the President met with European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Varhelyi, European Commissioner for Budget Johannes Hahn and European Commissioner for Justice and Rule of Law Didier Reynders.

The President also spoke online with the Vice President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis.

“Moldova is entering a new stage of cooperation with partner countries, based on transparency and mutual trust. The resumption of political dialogue and the warming of relations with European partners will contribute to the establishment of the rule of law, the strengthening of true democracy and a functional economy,” Sandu expressed confidence.
