PARLIAMENTARY OPPOSITION TO CHALLENGE DRAFT LAW ON CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS

09 april, 2024

The parliamentary opposition represented by the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) will challenge the draft law on amendments to the Constitution concerning European integration. The leader of the parliamentary faction of the BCS, Vice Chairman of the Parliament, Vlad Batrincea, announced this on Monday evening during the program "New Week with Anatolie Golea" on TV8 channel, saying that the bill itself was submitted with violations.

"The bill was registered and published on the website on Monday morning, and already less than an hour later "public hearings" were held. This is a mock hearing and a complete disregard for legalities. Not only were we not invited to the hearing, we were also not presented with the bill as stipulated in the parliamentary regulations," Batrincea stressed.

He made it clear that the BCS will challenge the bill in the Constitutional Court for several reasons.

"I will not reveal the brackets today, but there are many incongruities in the draft. The Constitution cannot be changed in the way the authors of the draft law propose (by holding a referendum, without a vote in parliament - "I")," the leader of the BCS faction emphasized.

Answering questions, he said that "the Socialists are not against the referendum on European integration in general, but they are strongly opposed to holding the referendum on the day of the presidential election."

"Again, the initiators of the referendum violated a number of norms. They also changed the Election Code in the election year, which is a violation of the norms of the Council of Europe," the opposition politician recalled.

According to him, the Bloc of Communists and Socialists has not yet made a final decision on tactics in case the referendum is held.

"Most likely, we will call for a boycott of this referendum. The boycott can be either ignoring the referendum and not participating in it, or voting against it," Batrincea concluded.
