PRESIDENT MAIA SANDU EXPLAINS THE NEED TO EXPAND THE COMPOSITION OF THE NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR EUROPEAN INTEGRATION

19 april, 2024

President Maia Sandu explained the need to expand the composition of the National Commission for European Integration. As reported by “INFOTAG”, the president clarified this issue at the first meeting of the commission on Thursday. Earlier this week, the president signed a decree approving the new composition of the commission, increased from 37 to 64 members.

“The expansion of the composition is due to the need for more active participation in the process of EU accession by the state, civil society, and the private sector. These efforts should come from the entire society: the private sector, the academic environment, representatives of civil society, as well as representatives of the diaspora,” the president said.

Sandu welcomed the restructuring of the government to include a new position of deputy prime minister for European integration and the creation of the Bureau for European Integration. Its goal is to coordinate the process of accession to the EU.

“The commission members analyzed the progress of legislative screening. The contribution of Moldova to the EU Enlargement Package for 2024 was discussed - a document assessing the progress of candidate countries for EU membership. The president stated the need to accelerate the process of EU accession, proposing to the commission members to start implementing the National Action Plan for Moldova's EU accession for 2024-2027,” the statement said.
