EUROPEAN SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY PROPOSES BANNING “POLITICAL MIGRATION”

23 april, 2024

The European Social Democratic Party (PSDE) has proposed banning “political migration” in Moldova. As reported by the INFOTAG agency, this was announced by its chairman, Ion Sula.

At a press conference on Tuesday, he stated that PSDE proposes for all parties to sign a Declaration condemning “political migration.” By signing the document, parties should commit to not admitting into the party individuals elected to public office on the lists of other parties.

“We also propose amending the legislation to eliminate political migration. It is necessary to legislatively establish that individuals elected to public office on the lists of one party, and then switch to another, lose the right to run for office in the next elections,” Sula emphasized.

He expressed regret that the current authorities are encouraging “political migration” of those elected to local government bodies.

“It is very regrettable that authorities use administrative resources and public funds, as well as funds received from development partners. The 'European Village' program is used to attract local elected officials. All of this is worthy of regret and condemnation. Political migration undermines voters' trust in government and the political system,” said Sula, calling on parties to sign the document initiated by PSDE.

The party proposed this initiative after almost the entire territorial organization of PSDE in the Hincesti district, including the mayors of 16 villages, announced their switch to the party and joining the ruling party PAS two weeks ago.

PSDE is the successor of the Democratic Party (DPM). It still includes many members who, during Vlad Plahotniuc's tenure, switched from other political formations to DPM.
