GOVERNMENT APPROVES DRAFT LAW ON DEPRIVATION OF CITIZENSHIP OF SANCTIONED PERSONS

08 may, 2024

The government approved on Wednesday a draft law suggesting the possibility of deprivation of citizenship for persons caught up in international sanctions.

INFOTAG reports that the government notes that the legislation in force already contains provisions authorizing the Information and Security Service to submit to the State Services Agency reasoned proposals for initiating the citizenship deprivation procedure, and the Agency to examine and submit the proposals to the president (in accordance with Articles 28 and 30 of the Law on Citizenship).

In this regard, the Government proposes that this provision in the draft law should read: "As for the subjects of (international) restrictions, citizens of the Republic of Moldova, the IRB shall consider the necessity of referring the case to the competent authorities (State Services Agency) in order to examine the possibility of deprivation of citizenship of such persons only on the grounds provided for in Article 23 (on deprivation of citizenship) of the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova", providing all the information collected in this regard".

In this context, Prime Minister Dorin Recean thanked the PAS deputies for this initiative, noting that international institutions, as well as countries such as the USA and Canada, "move much faster in cases of big corruption than the national justice system".
