PEOPLE'S ASSEMBLY ADDRESSED PARLIAMENT AND PRESIDENT WITH DEMAND TO STOP "ANTI-GAGAUZ" ACTIONS

19 april, 2024

On Friday, the deputies of the People's Assembly of Gagauzia (PAG) at an extraordinary session adopted an appeal to the Moldovan Parliament and President Maia Sandu, in which they demanded to stop "anti-Gagauz" and "anti-people" actions of the central authorities.

PAG deputy chairman Gheorghe Leiciu recalled that on April 12, "the Parliament adopted a law on changing the map of courts."

"It is supposed to liquidate the Appeal Chamber (AC) of Comrat, transferring it to the Chamber "South" in Cahul. The courts of Vulcanesti and Ceadir-Lunga will also move to Cahul," he said.

The autonomy believes that Comrat should include the courts in Comrat, Ceadir-Lunga and Vulcanesti, while the court of second instance should remain the AP of Comrat.

"Since PAS came to power, there has not been a single law that would contribute to improving life in Moldova. Everything is done to raise the degree in relations between Comrat and Chisinau," the authors of the appeal believe.

"With the transfer of the Cahul courts there will be problems - citizens' relocations will be longer, lawyers' services will not become cheaper. But the main thing is that the legal proceedings in the courts of Gagauzia were conducted in Russian, which is understood by all minorities - Gagauz, Bulgarians, Ukrainians. And in Cahul court - it will be in Romanian language," the appeal reads.

The PAG urged the Parliament not to liquidate the courts in the autonomy. Copies of the appeal were sent to the Council of Europe and international organizations monitoring the observance of the rights of national minorities in Moldova.
