ACTOR ION UNGUREANU TO BE BURIED IN CHISINAU CENTRAL CEMETERY

Well-known actor, film director and statesman Ion Ungureanu will be buried on Tuesday in the Chisinau central cemetery. Ungureanu died from an incurable disease at the age of 82 in Bucharest on Saturday.

Today, his body will be brought to Chisinau church St. Theodora of Sihla, where a memorial service will take place in the evening. On Tuesday morning, the coffin with the deceased will be moved to the National Palace for the farewell ceremony.

Ion Ungureanu was actor and art director in Luceafarul Theater and played in 25 feature films. Within the period of 1964 through 1972, he was Chief Director of the Moldovan Theater Luceafarul, since 1972 – producer in Small Theater (Moscow), in 1972 through 1989 – producer in the Soviet Army Central Theater.

He was one of 278 MPs of the first Moldovan Parliament, who voted for the declaration of independence of Moldova. In 1990-1994 he had headed the Ministry of Culture. Due to Ion Ungureanu’s efforts, Steven the Great monument has been re-installed in Chisinau downtown.

Chisinau Primaria [city government] announced on its website that it is going to propose to the Municipal Council to rename a city street or an institution in memory of Ion Ungureanu. Prime Minister also addressed to President Igor Dodon to declare the day of January 31 a mourning day.

In 1989, Ungureanu was awarded with the title of People’s Artist of the Moldovan Soviet Republic. In 2012 he was decorated with the Order of the Republic.
