MOLDOVAN AUTHORITIES WORKING ON ACTION PLAN FOR PARIS AGREEMENT IMPLEMENTATION

26 june, 2017

The representatives of the Moldovan authorities and civil society, European partners and a number of entrepreneurs discussed priorities and goals of the state on reducing the level of CO2 in atmosphere by 67% by 2030 against the 1990 rate. Such a demand was provided in the Paris Agreement on climate change Moldova ratified on May 4.

Environment Ministry state secretary Inga Podoroghin maintains that Moldova may lower this level by 78%.

“For this, a number of draft laws should be developed. Moldova may lower the level of air pollution by 80% with the help of investments worth US$340 million, which will go to purchasing of technologies”, she said.

According to UN Program Coordinator for Climate Change, Environment and Energy in Moldova Silvia Pana-Karp, the number of natural disasters – late frosts, hail, floods, drought – is growing in Moldova in recent years.

“The damage, caused by bad weather, is assessed at US$4 million annually. In 2016, the highest growth of global air temperature was registered (+1.2 degrees). Moldovan authorities should direct their efforts to reducing the consequences of climate change”, the ecologist said.

For this, she proposes to raise energy efficiency, use renewable energy sources, rehabilitate and extend forests, reduce the using of fertilizers and pesticides and shift to conservative land cultivation.

Infotag’s dossier: The ratification of the Paris Agreement opens for Moldova access to international funds on support to measures of counteracting global warming, namely - US$100 billion for developing countries for preserving the environment. The program on preserving environment is being implemented in Moldova by the UN and is sponsored by the European Union.
