ABSOLUTE MAJORITY OF LABOR MIGRANTS NOT GOING TO RETURN HOME

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Moldova conducted a cartographic research of Diaspora, which demonstrated that absolute majority of Moldovan labor migrants do not intend to come back to motherland.

According to the research, published within the Days of Diaspora, those, who went abroad in search for a job and better living conditions, do not see perspectives for returning home. The main reasons of mistrust in Moldova, according to them, are: corruption, political and economic instability, mistrust in political and socio-economic system, stealing of a billion, negative experience at attempts to start their own business in Moldova, safe future for their children abroad.

According to the research, most often it is economic factors that influence the departure of Moldovan citizens abroad. The largest Moldovan communities are in Russia, Italy and Israel.

The survey shows that over 70% Moldovan migrants are active young people up to 40 years old with education and the desire of self-affirmation. Despite this, absolute majority of them abroad are working not on their specialty, taking unskilled jobs. Women mostly are working as personnel, taking care of children and the patients, get employed in hotel sector, while men are working in building or transporting.

The cartographic research of Diaspora took place in the period of February 2016 through February 2017 in seven countries. It was a part of the project "Support to implementation of the component of migration and development of EU-Moldova Mobility Partnership, using its advantages for Transnistrian region of Moldova". The project is financed by the European Union in partnership with the Moldovan Government.
