MOLDOVA READY TO PROTECT AND DEVELOP PLANT GENETIC RESOURCES – FAO

A conference has been held on Thursday in Chisinau on the occasion of completion of the project “Support to Developing National Program for Plant Genetic Resources”, implemented in Moldova with the support of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

According to the FAO Chisinau office, the project had been implemented in Moldova since 2015, while its budget accounted for US$300 thousand.

Representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Vasile Sarban said at the conference that in long term perspective, the program will positively influence the national development, food safety, sustainable agriculture and preservation of biodiversity by means of using genetically efficient plants.

FAO deputy representative to Moldova Tudor Robu stressed the importance of involving all the interested sides in program implementation.

Besides its development, the project included the training of experts, researchers and technicians, who will engage in administrating the National bank of plant genetic resources, documenting and selection mastering.

FAO also provided modern instruments and equipment for training specialists for laboratory of the Institute of Genetics, Plant Physiology and Protection, which undertook responsibility for administrating the National bank of plant genetic resources.
