EBRD PRESIDENT WELCOMES STRENGTHENING OF ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL TIES BETWEEN MOLDOVA AND ROMANIA

27 march, 2024

President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Odile Renaud-Basso welcomes the strengthening of economic and financial ties between Moldova and Romania. According to “INFOTAG”, the banker stated this while speaking at the opening of the second Moldovan-Romanian forum Capital Bridges.

According to her, the war in Ukraine that started two years ago brought “huge difficulties" to Moldova.

"But now, despite the ongoing war, the situation has changed. Moldovan companies and entrepreneurs have coped with the complex environment created by the conflict, and now Moldova is a candidate country for EU membership. The banking sector has also coped with the pressure of the last two years. As the largest institutional investor, we support Moldova's banking and private sectors. One example is MAIB, the largest bank in Moldova and a stable partner of EBRD, which is preparing for listing on the Bucharest Stock Exchange. This should serve as an example for all Moldovan companies that want to access capital markets to ensure growth,” said Odile Renaud-Basso.

In her opinion, today's event demonstrates “strong economic cooperation and integration of capital markets between Moldova and Romania.”

“Such integration will enable Moldovan companies with high potential to access the Bucharest Stock Exchange, connect to sources for serious financial growth and success... EBRD has been closely involved in Moldova's banking sector reforms since 2014” and continues to work with Moldovan authorities to bring Moldova's financial infrastructure closer to the EU, “Romania and the Bucharest Stock Exchange are natural partners in this endeavor. On Moldova's path to Europe, EBRD will be alongside, providing support,"” concluded the president of the bank.
