CONSTRUCTION OF POWER LINE VULCĂNEȘTI - CHIȘINĂU HAS STARTED

29 march, 2024

The Ministry of Energy officially launched construction works of the 400 kV power transmission line Vulcănești – Chișinău on Friday. The laying of foundations for the supports will begin in three settlements in the south of the country - Congaz, Congazcicul de Sus, and Dezghingea.

According to INFOTAG, the ceremony marking the start of construction was attended by President Maia Sandu, Minister of Energy Victor Parlicov, Director of the state enterprise Moldelectrica Sergey Aparatu, and representatives of local and district public administrations of Comrat.

The head of state called the construction of the new high-voltage power line „one of the most important projects in the years of independence,” a „turning point” towards an energetically independent Moldova, „free to choose where to buy electricity, at any time, at the best price, without pressure and political blackmail from other countries.”

Parlicov noted that Moldova is still working on three projects to connect power grids with Romania.

Ruslan Surugiu, Director of the Unified Management for Implementation and Monitoring of Energy Projects (UCIPE), noted that around 500 supports will be installed for the 158-kilometer power line Vulcănești-Chișinău.

„The total weight of the line will be almost equivalent to the weight of the Eiffel Tower - about 10,000 tons, and the capacity of the new line will be about 500 MW, which will be able to supply about 50% of the electricity consumption in the country during peak load,” he said.

The new power line will pass through the districts of Taraclia, Cahul, Leova, Chisinau, Hîncesti, Ialoveni, Gagauzia, and the village of Bacioi (Chisinau). The works are carried out within the framework of the Energy System Development Project and are part of the government's urgent measures aimed at ensuring the energy security of the country.

The project cost, estimated until the end of 2025, is estimated at 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros are allocated for the construction of the line. The project is financed by the International Development Association from the World Bank group.
