RIGHT-WING OPPOSITION HOLDS PROTEST NEAR NBM OFFICE

19 july, 2018

The right-wing opposition parties DA, PAS and LDPM held a protest in front of the National Bank of Moldova headquarters on Wednesday.

The rally gathered several dozens of people, including DA and PAS leaders Andrei Nastase and Maia Sandu. Protesters were holding posters with demands to dismiss NBM President Sergiu Cioclea, as well as to return the stolen billion of dollars. They were sitting at the institution stairs and chanting "Return the billion!". The people also placed a banner with the inscription "captured institution" on the bank's wall.

Sandu said that the NBM is controlled by criminal regime which allowed the theft of the century to happen, while then took part in laundering Plahotniuc's dirty money.

"The NBM current head Sergiu Cioclea despite numerous citizens' demands does not want to publish the complete report of the Kroll detective agency; instead of casting a light upon the stealing of the billion he in fact is concealing it and is lobbying the Plahotniuc's interests in the country banking sector", the oppositionist said.

"We organized a protest action to remind the NBM leadership that they should act in citizens' interests", Sandu said.

PAS General Secretary Igor Grosu pointed that the NBM should play the main role in Moldova's banking sector, improving and reforming it, but the NBM somehow agreed to continue the policy of a controlled institution, while Sergiu Cioclea became a real mercenary of Plahotniuc.
