01 august, 2018

The National Bank of Moldova regards as unacceptable whatever political statements, does not recognize whatever pressing in the course of its work to cleanse the Moldovan banking system and to preserve the position of an independent institution working in pubic interests.

Such is the Statement the National Bank issued on Wednesday in response to the sayings heard recently from the lawyers of “a businessman with a dubious reputation”, Ilan Shor. According to the lawyers, “The Kroll 1 and Kroll 2 Reports contain no arguments or proofs, but only impressions and suppositions presented as an absolute truth”.

“After the bank fraud that had led to the bankruptcy of Banca de Economii [savings bank], Banca Sociala and Unibank, the NBM embarked on a series of reforms, including the adoption of new laws aimed at consolidation of the banking sector in citizens’ interests. In the course of the investigation carried out by the international consortium of Kroll and Steptoe & Johnson, a report was received here that was passed to Moldovan investigation agencies and to the Anti-Corruption Prosecution Service”, said the NBM Statement.

The central bank further held that Kroll based its conclusions on documentary evidences – concrete and independent – received from the documents presented to it by the National Bank, by the banks being liquidated and by competent foreign agencies.

Investigation results were brought to the knowledge of the Moldovan public. An in the course of its monitoring, the National Bank revealed facts of banking discipline violation and applied law-stipulated measures and sanctions. The NBM-appointed liquidators of the said banks lodged claims, on the basis of which a number of criminal litigations were started.

The National Bank believes that it has undertaken active measures aimed at preventing in the future of situations analogous to those that happened in 2014.
