NEW NBM HEAD WILL MEET HIGH STANDARDS ESTABLISHED BY SERGIU CIOCLEA - SPEAKER CANDU

21 november, 2018

New president of the National Bank of Moldova will meet high standards, established by Sergiu Cioclea and his team, wrote Speaker of the Parliament Andrian Candu commenting on the resignation of Cioclea from the post of NBM chairman.

Candu thanked him for fruitful activity, maintaining that in 2016 the leadership made a right choice appointing him in 2016.

According to Candu, over the time of Cioclea's work, interest rates fell to historical minimum, the national currency became more stable and important investments came to the banking sector.

European Parliament deputy Siegfried Muresan said that Cioclea's resignation from the post of the NBM head is a proof of Chisinau authorities' failure to return the stolen billion and punish the guilty.

"The authorities undertook this commitment before European partners, which is said in the European Parliament resolution, adopted last week. Over two years of the NBM president mandate, the progress in the field of fulfilling this task was insufficient, while Cioclea's resignation casts doubt on the reparation and seeking the guilty in the nearest time", the European Parliament press service cites Muresan's words.

According to him, the Moldovan Parliament should in shortest possible time appoint a new governor, who would be able to ensure NBM's independence from politicians, because for returning investors' trust in Moldova's banking system it is necessary to resolve the question with the billion fraud, to strengthen the legislation in this field and to have a really independent National Bank.

Muresan said that if Moldovan authorities want to regain European partners' trust and accelerate the process of republic's European integration, they have to return the money, stolen from banks, punish the guilty and respect people's will, expressed by means of democratic election of Chisinau mayor.
