GOVERNMENT DEVELOPING NEW AGREEMENT WITH USA IN ORDER TO SALE THE TERRITORY OF FORMER „REPUBLICAN STADIUM”

The government announced on Friday the development of a new agreement under which the land plot on Tighina Street (the territory of the former Republican Stadium) in the center of Chisinau will be sold to the USA for the construction of the embassy of this country in the Republic of Moldova.

As reported by INFOTAG, the government press service stated that authorities have initiated negotiations for the document, which would allow the use of this 5.2-hectare land plot, „abandoned for almost 17 years.”

It is expected that the selling price will be around 15 million euros, but all final details will be disclosed after the negotiating group completes all processes.

The money from the sale of the land will be allocated to several important projects: the creation of the Universul Center for Modern Art and Culture; renovation of sports schools across the country; conducting technical and economic justification and designing of the future National Stadium.

„By April 10, the draft agreement must be approved by ministries and the parliamentary committee on foreign policy and European integration. After that, negotiations will begin to determine the exact text of the new agreement, including the final transaction amount, the height of the future construction, and the funds that the American side will provide to buy out buildings from private owners (more than ten private properties mainly shops are located on the territory of the former stadium),” the government's statement said.

It asserts that the sale will be conducted at a fair price and conditioned by the fulfillment of several mandatory requirements: preservation of the historical gates of the stadium as architectural value, creation of a green zone on the plot, and compliance with height restrictions for buildings.

As previously reported by INFOTAG, the US embassy has long expressed interest in acquiring the plot under the former Republican Stadium for the construction of a new office. A memorandum of intent for the sale of the stadium's territory for embassy construction was signed by the government of Natalia Gavrilita in April 2022. Subsequently, the memorandum's action has been extended several times (current - until June 30, 2024). The delay was caused by the problem of conducting an evaluation of the plot.
