BY THE END OF 2024, MOLDOVA'S DEBT TO GDP RATIO WILL NOT EXCEED 38% - FINANCE MINISTER PETRU ROTARU

12 april, 2024

External creditors assess the Republic of Moldova as a “reliable country,” said Finance Minister Petru Rotaru. According yo INFOTAG, in an interview with Europa Libera, Rotaru said that by the end of 2024, the state's debt will be less than 38% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“We are approximately in the middle of the permissible limit of the debt-to-GDP ratio,” the minister noted.

According to data from the National Bank, Moldova's external debt currently stands at 10.5 billion, which, per capita, amounts to 4.2 thousand.

“Such a debt should not cause concern among citizens, despite being a substantial amount,” said Rotaru, emphasizing that the government directs external loans towards infrastructure improvement and development, motivating citizens to stay in Moldova.

Addressing the question of Moldova's ability to timely repay internal and external debts, the minister remarked that there have been no delays in their repayment.

The finance minister announced that in 2024, Moldova is expected to receive grants totaling 2 billion lei. This is significantly less compared to 2023, when the volume of grants reached 5 billion lei, the majority of which replenished the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund to provide compensation during the cold period.
