12 january, 2015

A group of orthodox believers organized a protest action on Monday, criticizing the Chisinau Primaria [city government] for the refusing to carry out activities and celebrate Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar.

The protesters demanded not to discriminate people, who are celebrating Christmas according to the old style.

They said each person has the right to celebrate any holiday, including Christmas, both according to the Julian calendar (on December 25) and Gregorian calendar (on January 7).

“The city government should have been carrying out activities both on December 25 and on January 7, but not to call people sectarians and celebrate only in December”, said the protesters.

At the Monday’s primaria meeting, Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca regarded as inappropriate words of Head of the Chisinau Culture Department Lucia Culev about the fact that those, who are celebrating Christmas on January 7, are sectarians.
