LDP, DP THINK MOLDOVA SHOULD NOT RUSH TO SUBMIT APPLICATION FOR JOINING EU

29 january, 2015

The Liberal Democratic Party and Democratic Party share the opinion that Moldova should not hurry to submit documents for admission to the European Union.

LDPM Deputy Chairman Valeriu Strelet said to journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, “We need to get better prepared to such an important step, before which we should yet implement a package of essential reforms. We must fulfill our EU commitments so as to ensure better chances for the republic to be admitted to the European Union, not just to submit papers. In the AEM frame, we will scrutinize and thoroughly consider how to best implement the EU-Moldova Association Agreement”.

In his words, next few months the governing Alliance for European Moldova will be attaching particular attention to realization of reforms and Association Agreement provisions.

“We will do our best to do much before the Eastern Partnership Summit to be held in Riga (Latvia) next May. In any way, the application submission question will be discussed in the AEM, and when we feel we are ready we will send in such application”, said Valeriu Strelet.

Democratic Party leader Marian Lupu thinks a hasty document submission “may only play a nasty trick on Moldova”.

“Suppose we submit the application. We should realize that we may well hear no, or that our documents may be collecting dust on the shelf for many subsequent years. Will this be good for Moldova? What for do we need such political PR if we know we will be refused or will be long ignored? If we really need a positive result, we should listen to the recommendations of our partners from the European Union. Besides this, decline of an accession application may be detrimental for Moldova’s Euro-integration course”, said Marian Lupu.

Unlike the above-mentioned two politicians, Liberal Party Chairman Mihai Ghimpu believes the application for EU membership should be lodged with Brussels “the sooner the better”.

“I certainly know there are countries that submitted applications for EU membership decades ago, but are not EU members yet. But the thing in all this is: as soon as Moldova files its documents for admission, our political class and government will be supposed to bear a much greater responsibility for the implementation of reforms”, said the LP leader.
