PARLIAMENTARY SUBCOMMITTEE TO MONITOR ECHR INDICTMENTS AGAINST MOLDOVA

02 february, 2016

The realization in Moldova of rulings by the European Court of Human Rights and an analysis of the reasons why Moldova fails so often in the Court will be entrusted to a special parliamentary subcommittee, it was decided at the Tuesday’s working meeting of the parliamentary Standing Committee for Legal Issues, Appointments and Immunity.

Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici stated at the Committee sitting that due to an imperfect legislation and through judges’ faults, the Government of Moldova loses quite many cases in the European Court.

“This is precisely why there appeared an acute need for forming a special body, which – acting within the said Standing Committee – will be tackling the decisions the ECHR takes with respect to Moldova”, said Liliana Palihovici.

In her words, upon revealing a substantial volume of systemic violations, inconsistencies and faults, the Standing Committee will work out proposals for improving the legislation in force.

Infotag’s dossier: In 2015, the European Court received from Moldova citizens more than 1 thousand claims against the Government of Moldova. Court judgments were taken on 19 cases, so the Government is supposed to repay a total of 211.7 thousand euros to defendants. Among 47 CoE member countries, the Republic of Moldova is on the 3rd position by the number of complaints its citizens send to the ECHR.
