MOLDOVAN DIASPORA REPRESENTATIVES GOING TO CHALLENGE ELECTION RESULTS WITH SUPREME COURT

29 november, 2016

Representatives of the Moldovan diaspora abroad are intending to challenge the results of the recent presidential election with the Supreme Court, lawyer Nicolae Rosca stated to journalists on Monday.

According to him, the Chisinau Appeals Court has stated that this claim falls out of its scope of competence.

Rosca said that on one claim, presidential candidate Maia Sandu requested the court to cancel the Central Election Commission’s decision on recognizing the victory of candidate Igor Dodon. She referred to 9 types of violations which, in her belief, had influenced the election outcome.

In the framework of another case initiated at the Sectorul Centru Court of Chisinau, a group of nearly 140 Moldova citizens living in 8 countries are challenging the restriction of their and other citizens’ right to vote. They are maintaining that this right was restricted because when they came to their polling stations on November 13, they failed to receive ballot-papers for voting. The court decided to unite all of the complaints into a single litigation.

The diaspora representatives, who applied to court against the Moldovan Government and the Central Election Commission for violating their rights, asked the defendants not to politicize the process.

“This process is equally important for Republic of Moldova citizens staying outside the country and for those at home. We are emphasizing that the court is considering only the violation of the individual’s right to vote irrespective of the person’s political preferences. That’s why it is very important not to politicize this trial”, said the initiative group’s press release.
