DPM CONDEMNS PRESIDENT DODON’S MOSCOW STATEMENTS

18 january, 2017

The Democratic Party, the leading political force in the Moldovan pro-European ruling coalition, has condemned certain sayings made by President Igor Dodon in Moscow on Tuesday, and called the Moldovan Parliament to confirm the country’s firm adherence to its chosen European path.

The DP statement said that Moldova’s approximation with the European Union must remain “the fundamental direction of the Republic of Moldova’s external policy”.

The Democratic Party wrote that it stands categorically against President Dodon’s intention to annul the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, and that DP will be neutralizing politically any annulment attempts.

The Democrats regard as unrealistic the President’s intention to sign a memorandum on cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union because “there exist no real mechanisms for this, no social or political support of this project in Moldova”.

Therefore, “This Dodon’s initiative will remain just a political intention, and the Democratic Party will do everything in its powers to decline it as one not meeting the interests of the state”.

At the same time, the Democrats recognize that “good relations with the Russian Federation are very important for Moldova, for broadening trade and cooperation in the fields of economy, sciences, security”.

The Democratic Party called on the President of the country to refrain from speaking out his personal opinion on the country’s foreign policy during his overseas visits “because the policy is shaped in Chisinau in the Moldovan Parliament and it is mandatory for all”.
