20 january, 2017

Moldovan Parliament Chairman Andrian Candu has stated an intention to discuss with President Igor Dodon the questions of interaction in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process.

On Thursday, Candu met with experts from the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) project and discussed also the Moldovan Parliament’s cooperation with the Gagauzia Popular Assembly so as to handle and solve by joint effort the problems faced by the southern Moldovan autonomous region of Gagauzia.

“2016 was a year of establishing ties and determining possibilities for the Moldovan Parliament and for the GPA. The working group’s annual report for 2016 indicated that results were achieved that can be further developed in 2017. Presently, we have 4 drafts of legislative documents proposed by the said group, and these are undergoing legislative procedures. The working group of the Moldovan Parliament and the Popular Assembly will resume work after the Assembly appoints its new members from among the new lineup of the regional legislature”, said Andrian Candu.

On Wednesday, in his meeting with Special Representative of the Austrian OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for the Transnistrian Settlement Process, Ambassador Wolf Dietrich Heim, Speaker Candu stated that the Parliament stands ready to grant a special legal status to the Transnistrian region.

“The Transnistrian conflict settlement is remaining an important topic on the Parliament’s work agenda. Any actions, undertaken for the Transnistrian conflict settlement, must proceed from provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, from the unitary character of our state, and must be approved within the 5+2 negotiating format [Moldova and Transnistria as the conflicting sides, Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE as international mediators and guarantors (5); and the European Union and the United States as observers (2)]”, stated Andrian Candu.

Also on Wednesday, Moldova’s Political Representative at the Transnistria negotiations, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Affairs Gheorghe Balan stated that it is necessary to coordinate actions between power branches in settling the Transnistrian conflict. He also stressed that President Dodon’s proposal to settle the Transnistrian problem by federalization of Moldova “reflects the position of only those who voiced it”.
