MCP WILL MAKE ALL IT CAN TO PREVENT CONSOLIDATION OF DICTATORIAL REGIME AT POWER

27 april, 2017

The opposition parliamentary Moldovan Communist Party will be doing all in its power to upset a final settlement of the current dictatorial regime at power, the ex-President of Moldova, Party Chairman MP Vladimir Voronin stated in his meeting with Ambassador Pirkka Tapiola, Head of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, on Wednesday.

Voronin expressed indignation that instead of solving concrete socio-economic problems, the incumbent authorities “have invented a new manipulation in the hope to convert their 2% popularity rating into their control of constitutional majority in the next Parliament of Moldova”.

The ex-president reminded that in 2016 the Communist Party used all available possibilities, up to a boycott of “the illegitimate presidential election, to draw the domestic and international public’s attention to the coup d’etat committed by the Democratic Party and its puppet Constitutional Court”.

“And today, more and more citizens are coming to realize the entire erroneousness of their decision to go to the polls [in late 2016], because their participation has permitted the authorities to legalize their political farce – a direct presidential election. This time, the drowning Democratic Party has invented a new life buoy by changing the current electoral system in Moldova. And there is no doubt that the legislative initiative by President Igor Dodon and his Party of Socialists on the need to introduce a mixed electoral system is the fruit of bargaining between the Socialists and Democrats”, stated the former President of Moldova.

In his opinion, the last week’s signature by 6 opposition parties of a joint declaration for preserving the current electoral system is a means of counteraction called to draw the attention of the Venice Commission, the OSCE and the Council of Europe to the absence of a broad political consensus in Moldova on this vital issue.
