PRESIDENT DODON STATES MOLDOVA'S INTEREST TO CHAIR IN CIS

12 octomber, 2017

President Igor Dodon has officially stated the Republic of Moldova's interest to receive presidency in the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Commenting on the results of the Summit of the CIS Heads of State held in Sochi (Russia) on Wednesday, Dodon wrote on his Facebook page: "I stated with regret that Moldova missed its turn to preside in the CIS in 2017 and I voiced the country's interest to receive this privilege in subsequent years. We must develop cooperation both with the West and the East. The vast potential of cooperation with our Eastern partners has not been realized to a full extent. I am convinced Moldova must play a more active role in the FSU area, in particular within the framework of the CIS and the Eurasian Economic Union [of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, EAES].

The President further wrote that in his address to the CIS Summit, he underscored the importance of the existence of the CIS for all its member countries, saying: "Had we lived completely separately without maintaining friendship and contacts, we would have been cut into pieces with a geopolitical axe - all of us. It is not just a metaphor - it is the reality of our days. Many of us the CIS republics have experienced such destructive processes during our independent histories".

In his words, not only self-sufficiency but the very statehood of the Republic of Moldova depends on stability and positive processes in the CIS countries and in the Eurasian Economic Union.

"That's why the existence of the CIS and the EAES is a question of survival for us as for a full-fledged independent state", Dodon wrote in the Facebook.

The President further wrote that the Sochi Summit adopted a number of important decisions, including the declaration of 2020 as the Year of the 75th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Another important document adopted by the CIS Summit was the Joint Statement of the CIS Presidents on support for the institution of the family and traditional family values. On which occasion Dodon wrote: "The family is a link between generations - the basis for ensuring a healthy and sustainable future... The text of the Joint Statement will be sent to the United Nations, the OSCE and other international organizations".

Each country's presidency in the CIS lasts one year, and the member states receive it in the alphabetical order. Last year, Moldova refused to use its turn, so the CIS presidency automatically went to Russia. Before, the Russian Federation took up this mission several times when other countries refused to chair the organization.
